A report going to cabinet this week (Wednesday February 15 2012) will show how the council is on track to achieve a balanced budget.

The report shows the council has made continued improvement in aiming to ensure there is no deficit come the end of the financial year.

At the end of December 2011 the council’s projected deficit was down to £279,000 from a projected deficit of £1,539,000 in the previous report. It is important to note that this is a projected deficit and not an actual one.

All projected overspends continue to be highlighted to enable the council to take steps to address pressures in its budget. The council does not expect to have an overspend at the end of the financial year.

Cabinet member for finance, John Brady, said:

Our open and transparent budget monitoring ensures we are continually identifying any potential overspends and we take action as necessary. We have been working very hard with our managers to address potential overspends and look at how these can be avoided. This latest report clearly shows the good progress we are making and I fully expect the council to have a balanced budget at the end of the financial year.
